The simple and unique combination of food and flavours in this recipe makes it my absolute favourite smoothie (so far) and those who tasted it at the raw food demonstration yesterday were pleasantly surprised. It tastes great, and having the combination of four of the most super nutritious foods on the planet, you can’t really go wrong can you?
Raw Banana Caramelly Smoothie
Ingredients:
1-2 celery sticks (some leaves included)
1-2 very ripe bananas
Heaped teaspoon spirulina
1 litre coconut water
Optional Extras: 1/2 cup chia seeds (soaked overnight) and/or blueberries
Equipment:
High speed blender
Place celery and bananas into the blender with half litre of coconut water. Blend on high for one minute, then add spirulina and the rest of the coconut water. I always add the spirulina last, after the fruit/vegetables are nice and smooth to keep it in the most purest form possible.
Notes:
Most conventional blenders will not be able to break the celery down so you will need at least 1000w blender to achieve best results. I use either a Vitamix or Omega blender.
Spirulina has been described as the most complete food source in the world. It contains more than 60% highly digestible protein and over 100 nutrients; too many to name.
I use the Hawaiian Pacifica brand for many reasons including where it’s grown, how it’s grown and dried, along with how it’s packaged in the glass bottle with the LOCTEC* oxygenless storage. You can usually find it at your local health food store.
If you can access fresh green coconuts then you are as lucky as I am and you have tapped into one of the most wonderfully hydrating liquids on the planet. Otherwise, the next best option is to buy it by the litre from your local health food store or supermarket. Choose the brand with the least amount of sugar.
I make almost two litres in the morning and drink the whole lot throughout the morning to keep me satisfied!
